Elementary Math Methods Essay The aim of this practice is to help students understand place value concepts such as ones, tens, hundreds and grouping. In the activity, students are encouraged to record school days using straws. They add up the straws every day until they total to ten so as to transfer the bundle to a tens pocket. Depending on the grade level, they can go further to group the tens bundles to make a pocket of one hundred straws. In addition, students are told to note down the right integers to represent the number of bundles and number of single straws (Kawas, 2010a). Place Value Race http://www. theteachersguide. com/Mathactivities3. html This practice engages students in some sort of competition aimed at assisting them understand place value of integers (0-9) according to their position in a number. The students are grouped into two and each group given a set of red, yellow, blue and orange colored cards. The students are then instructed to select a color to stand for each place value (e. g. yellow for ones, red for tens, blue for hundreds etc) (Math Activities III, n. d. ). The instructor then says a number (let say 3456) and the groups compete to create the number using the cards. The first group to create the number is awarded some points and the game continues until all students have participated effectively. Some students are given demo cards and instructed to go in front while the rest remain on their desks with integer cards (Kawas, 2010b). The teacher says a number and instructs students at front to line up in such a manner to create the number while those at the desks are required to organize the cards to create the same number. After creating the number, students are asked to say the integer at the tens or hundreds, or thousands position. To encourage creativity among the students, the teacher can randomly choose a student to give out directions for creating the numbers to the other students. The Subjection of Women: In Today’s Context Essay -- Literacy Analysis

In the year 1869, John Stuart Mill published a controversial essay, â€Å"The Subjection of Women†, that advocated equality between sexes in a male-dominant society. In this essay, I will demonstrate that Mill’s analysis regarding the systematic subjection of women, by an education system producing conventional â€Å"womanly† characters favorable to men, is correct. However, I will argue that this analysis does not apply to today due to the advancement of the political rights and powers, progression of social equality, and improved economic conditions of women in countries with high education indexes. The education index is referring to the statistics on literacy rate, gross enrollment ratios, and other factors compiled by the UN that determine which countries have exemplary education. In Mill’s analysis, he likens the subjection of women to the relationship between a master and a slave. Whereas the master commands the slave’s obedience through fear and force, according to Mill, men subject women through an institutionalized form of education. This system of education instills the idea that â€Å"all women are brought up from the very earliest years in the belief that their ideal of character is the very opposite of that of men; not self-will, and government by self-control, but submission and yielding to the control of others† (Mill 22). Furthermore, Mill mentions this method fulfills man’s desire to acquire the obedience of women through their willing disposition unlike the obedience found in a master-slave relationship. Main Events of World War 2

†¢World War II started on the third of September 1939 and ended in April 1945. Over these years the were many significant events in World War Two such as Germany declaring war on the U. S and the invasion of Poland. A few that is of some importance that will be discussed in detail in following are the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbour, when Germany surrenders after Hitler commits suicide and when the U. S drops a bomb over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. †¢The attack on Pearl Harbour was a horrific ordeal because it was a surprising attack on the U.S navel base at Pearl Harbour conducted by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The attack was in Hawaii on the morning of December 7, 1941. The U. S base was attacked by 353 Japanese fighters, all eight U. S battleships were damaged some way or another. Some being sunk, two being raised from the water and with for repaired, over all there were six in total to return to service later in the war. There were numerous reasons for the Japanese for attac king the U. S on Pearl Harbour. The tension between the two nations started in 1931 when the invasion on Manchuria by the Japanese.Although there was multiple events in World War 2 the bombing of Pearl Harbour only feed the fire of the great world war. †¢Adolf Hitler died on the 30th of April 1945 by his own bullet in Fuherbunker in Berlin. His wife Eva died along side of him by ingesting cyanide. From these acts it resulted in Germany surrendering, This is also extraordinary on account of the war ending. Hitler realizing that all hope was lost and not whishing to suffer Mussolini’s fate, the dictator of Germany committed suicide. Germany raise the white flag to the Western Allies and the soviet Union took place in late April and early May 1945.

Strength vs. Values Strong and powerful is controversial, because it differs person to person. Also, throughout generations and cultures, the definition has been modified. Usually, one’s values are connected to their interpretation of strength. For example, my emphasis on my values are utterly different from Okonkwo’s values. The Ibo culture developed their own idea of strength, American society has modernized it, and one’s values may differ from another’s. Throughout Things Fall Apart, the Ibo’s idea of strength is illustrated through the villagers and Okonkwo’s thoughts. In the Ibo society, the only way to succeed was to be male and a good farmer, and Okonkwo followed this concept. Okonkwo’s values and mine relate to the cultures we live in. An important value to me is my education, because in America, the main way to thrive is to be erudite. Okonkwo strived to be a good farmer, because in his clan, â€Å"yam stood for manliness, and he who could feed his family on yams from one harvest to another was a very great man indeed† (30). His culture also valued possessions, although I try not to value them. Okonkwo wanted to be successful and be the opposite of his lazy father, just like I want to be able to support myself when I grow older. â€Å"Even as a little boy he had resented his father’s failure and weakness†¦Okonkwo was ruled by one passion-to hate everything his father Unoka had loved.
